Dear Earthlings:

The year of wonders is what 2012 is supposed to be. Yours truly offers snippets of her favorite books. All on yesterday's forbidden themes. Let's see if their mysteries are revealed.

Eros is a story that staved off the loneliness of her first years in the Caribbean, when she was missing her former Matrias, California and Italy.

Can a "no" become a "yes"? That's one of the main themes. Many a "no" has turned into a "yes" since time immemorial. Yet the very question became taboo. Why? If we respect a "no" that becomes a "yes," we will respect a "yes" that becomes a "no." Isn't that a win-win? A world where love can change our minds is a world where love abounds.

Here are yours truly's reflections back in 2007. Eros: A Journey of Multiple Loves, has the full story.

"Campus culture was increasingly aware of rape, and Stephane and i could not help but notice that the rapist was always male, the raped female. . . . "There must be a way in which a woman can rape a man" I commented. And that's how we came to see our erotic performances, especially those in which I was the initiator, as examples of male rape. . . .
But when a man's voice says no, his body might be saying yes with a flamboyant erection. In this case, the man's voice and his genitals make two opposite statements. "Which one is more correct?" we wondered. In the past, rape had been a crime against the woman's family, often repaired with the rapist marrying the girl" (17).

The narrative continues as Stephane and Gaia bask in their amorous erotic play. Oh blessed be!

Is learning erotic? That's one of the main themes. Students and teachers have fallen in love with each other since time immemorial. Yet the very question has become a taboo. Why? Love produces desire to know. Knowledge produces desire to love. Isn't that a win-win? A world where knowledge is loved is a world that knows love and reveres it.

Here are yours truly's reflections back in 2007. Eros: A Journey of Multiple Loves, has the full story.

"As a teacher and student of many years, I know that, no matter what sexual-harassment policies say, learning is erotic since it activates the pleasure of discovery by putting brain cells in motion, and stimulates the body-mind by opening up vistas and possibilities to the imagination. The erotic energy emanating from this process is what keeps people in schools--it is what keeps us engaged in the learning process, be it as students and teachers. . . . I was not fully aware of this when . . . I was going to become my student's teacher of language as well as love" (4).

PostaHouse: Report on Transition, Invitation to Ecosexual Partnership

Dear Earthlings:

Yours truly is very excited about PostaHouse. It's a holistic community and ecosexual temple for the arts of loving inclusively. It's in the Apennine mountains of central Italy. And it's a place she loves. Yours truly wants to tell you all about it and invite your contribution to the transformation underway. Love, the ecology of life, is what's coming in. You can be a partner in this.

PostaHouse was born in the fall when Jeffrey Andreoni, of New York, Italy, and Greece, arrived at the place and began the transformation underway. It is now in transition from being an ancestral family home to becoming a holistic center with a core community of residents, and with a summer season open for courses, workshops, events, retreats. The vision is aligning the world for the ecosexual future of our most compersive lover: third planet Gaia, the earth. Education in the arts of loving is where this alignment begins.

As we move toward the time when our first season begins, John Overton, of Nova Scotia, England, and Sweden, will take residence on the site. John will offer stewardship to the property as needed and prepare the space as a school of love. He will welcome contributions from others interested and will guide their action toward the vision. The temple will be formed as a laboratory where education in the arts of love can begin. Yours truly will continue to make the space available to those devoted to its becoming what it is destined to be. She will support the process of transformation physically and energetically. She will spread the word to healers, practitioners, facilitators, leaders ready to fill up the schedule of the summer season. She will publicize events and take registrations in. She will make her networks available as vehicles for this inspired work to begin.

Education is the heart of democracy. The true, horizontal collaboration we need. Education to love is where the new democracy that includes planet earth as a partner begins. When our talents as artists of love develop we become resources capable of generating all the love we need.

At PostaHouse we offer participation in the process of creating the ecosexual temple we need. This opportunity is open from March to September, 2012. You, dear Earthlings, are invited to be part of this. Please let John know what you have to offer and together we will design an agreement with you.

We also offer a temple-to-be where to teach these transformational tools, processes, and techniques that empower us as sources of love. This opportunity is open from June to September included. You, dear Earthling, are also invited to be part of this. If you are a healer, facilitator, teacher, leader, bring your course, workshop, event, retreat to us, and we will find the most convenient time to put it on the schedule for the summer season. We will make ad-hoc agreements with facilitators and teachers. We will also publicize all events on calendar through our networks and take registrations in.

We at PostaHouse look forward to an ecosexual partnership with you. We want this holistic community to steward the little piece of earth it has been given. And we want this school of love to be the sacred, ecosexual temple it is meant to be. To make this happen, dear Earthlings, we need you!

Serena Anderlini-D'Onofrio, PhD, is a writer, professor, leader, healer, and activist in the paradigm shift toward a Gaian future where humanity makes peace with our hostess planet. She is a successful coach and workshop leader working on polyamory and bisexuality issues. She believes that the Sacred Sex Movement, the Global Ecology Movement and the Holistic Health Movement are part of this paradigm shift. She is currently active in the global Polyamory, Bisexuality, Ecosexuality, and AIDS Dissidence movements and communities. Her latest book, Gaia & the New Politics of Love: Notes for a Poly Planet, was released in September 2009, from North Atlantic Books, Berkeley. a great scientist of Gaia has passed, leaving a wonderful legacy that needs tending. Lynn Margulis was the most biocentric of the Gaia scientists, and a major inspiration for yours truly's Gaia and the New Politics of Love. Her books of science read like novels because she was in love with the Earth, enchanted with its animated creatures large and small, passionate about their symbiosis. This is the announcement from James MacAllister, a friend of science who is taking taking the legacy on.

Dear all,

It is with great sadness to pass along the news that a great American scientist has died. Lynn Margulis died on at 5:15 PM (17:15 EST) on November, 22, 2011; she was 73 years old. She suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke last Thursday. She will be dearly missed by her devoted family, students, her many friends and colleagues around the world.
In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to the Lynn Margulis Memorial Fund*. This fund will be used to support students that will continue her scientific research.

Dear Earthlings:

we come to the most liquid and final part of the tale.  In their love embrace, Greeneyes and Penelope remind yours truly of the nymph Cyane in Ovid's Metamorphosis.  She watches Persephone kidnapped by Pluto to the underworld and imagines the grief her mother must endure to lose her.  Cyane's tears flow so abundantly that she becomes water.  The thought of a woman loosing herself at the loss of another woman melts her into the maternal liquidity we all come from.  Is one's mother one's true lover?  Amrita takes new meaning and form.

Il tempo è sincopato dai picchi di piacere, ti assaporo, gusto per la prima volta il sapore del tuo sesso di donna, la mia lingua percorre ogni piega tra le tue gambe calde e prendo tra le labbra le tue labbra frementi; le mie dita penetrano dolcemente dentro di te e ti accarezzano, ti percorrono, imprigionano e liberano il mio piacere ed il tuo. 
Poi desiderio di acqua, di rivoli d'acqua calda che scorrano lungo il tuo corpo ed il mio, per condividere insieme il flusso liquido, che ci scorre fuori e ci percorre dentro. Siamo sotto la doccia, ed accarezzarti, assaggiarti, leccarti, sentirti vibrare nel profondo del tuo godimento è eccitante e sacro al tempo stesso.
Vivo l'acqua come simbolo di vita, è rito ancestrale e propiziatorio, indica purificazione e rinascita. Il sedile della doccia è mosaico colorato e cangiante, con l'acqua che scroscia e riluce, "sembra un trono", penso. E' il momento più intenso del desiderio di te, ti accarezzo dappertutto, le mie dita a suonare il tuo piacere, la mia bocca tra le tue cosce, con l'acqua che mi batte sul volto e si mischia al gusto della tua femminilità. Il tuo corpo che si scuote, la tua voce che racconta in gemiti il mondo lontano e vicino del godimento senza confini, mi trasmette una sensazione di felicità profonda e sprigiona energia e piacere, anche per me.
La cascata d'acqua su di noi è interrotta, le tue braccia mi avvolgono in un candido asciugamano e sento il tuo abbraccio, le carezze che dissolvono le gocce d'acqua sul mio corpo, ma lasciano traccia della libidine e della passione. L'acqua non è più visibile, ma è dentro di noi, energia pulsante, fiume carsico che ci unisce fin nel profondo, fonte pura che suggella il nostro legame.

Dear Earthlings:

Penelope and Greeneyes continue their dance. The Ode is present. Their bodies are becoming one in the ecstasy. The liquid nature of the source of love becomes more evident.

I wish I could translate at least this part of the novella which is a poem. Time is amiss for me, but suggestions for a good translator are welcome. Meanwhile, the music of Italian is in the liquidity of its vowels, something for everyone to enjoy. Imagine the "girls" at play.

Ode alla fonte pura, cont'd

E' la vita. La danza della vita.

Più ci scivolo dentro più mi sentirò viva.

E allora esperienza. Mangiata, succhiata, leccata.

Perché è vita e tu sei come me.

Tuo il fascino della prima volta. Mia la meraviglia dello scoprire.

La tua tensione eccitante ed elettrica.

E la mia attenzione alta.

Non ferire, l'equilibrio portato oltre un limite già dimenticato .

I capelli tra le mani, la voglia trattenuta di stringere forte. Sentire che pulsi sotto di me .

Il collo. Da accarezzare e mordere.

Le parole sono diverse con una donna. Non meno sensuali o meno volgari.

Diverse.

Le labbra morbide. Tutte morbide, bagnate e scivolose .

La pelle che si struscia, le dita che scivolano, entrano.

Cercare quel punto. Trovare la forza primitiva che è in te e in me.

Anzi no. E' te e me assieme.

Le azioni sono diverse con una donna. Non meno penetranti o meno profonde.

Diverse.

Un uomo non sa cosa sente quel corpo mentre entra con un gesto sacro.

Io sì.

Amplificato. So di te e sento di me.

Non c'è confine ora tra il tuo piacere e il mio.

Tra la tua anima e la mia.

Facciamo l'amore dell'anima mi scriverai in seguito.

Facciamo l'amore nell'anima la mia risposta.

Forza dirompente e calda.

Scoppia l'energia in quel gemito.

Vorrei che urlassi e io vorrei urlare assieme a te.

Quanto c'è di antico atavico primordiale.

the process of getting to know the other as one gets to know love and as that other is one like oneself continues in this part of the tale. The liquidity becomes more intense as the bodies dissolve in the erotic embrace and as the room of love offers itself as a witness of their ecstasy.

Lascio che la tua voce mi racconti di te e mi concentro sulle parole, ma assorbo anche il tono, il modulato accento che mi riporta alle tue radici.
Di nuovo un viaggio, fuori e dentro di me, movimento verso i luoghi e le persone: l'immobilità del pensiero non mi è congeniale, sono magma emotivo e calore carnale.
La tua sensualità mi ha colpita immediatamente e ho capito subito che stavamo parlando lo stesso linguaggio, universale, dei sensi, un indagare nell'eros curioso e goloso, ed intenso.
Siamo finalmente sole, in albergo; la nostra allegria è naturale e l'attrazione fa il resto: ci togliamo gli stivali e ci tuffiamo sul letto, vicine, e continuiamo a parlarci mentre ci accarezziamo, teneramente, ma con una sottile voglia che cresce progressivamente e che presto diventerà audacia.

A collection of essays and miscellaneous writings on Ecosexuality

Ecosexuality has emerged as a socially transformative movement where the energies of activism, art, theory, and practice coalesce. It is a style of amorous, erotic, sexual, and artistic expression that extends love and agency to nature as an equal. Ecosexuals theorize human bodies as ecosystems similar to those that make up our hostess, lover, and mother-- Earth. Ecosexual practices reconnect the metabolism of our species to the metabolism of third planet Earth. Ecosexuals believe that humans are nature. Ecosexuals are artists of love who wed themselves to nature and invent imaginative ways to extend equal rights to all its elements and life forms. They come in all colors, backgrounds and orientations. Ecosex activism brings more fun, passion, hope and diversity to the environmental and holistic health movements. It generates global awareness of love as the ecology of life on planet Earth. Ecosexuality can awaken erotic feelings for nature, including human nature as a highly erotic species. It revisits every aspect of life as an opportunity for the intellectual, spiritual, political and artistic expression of ecosexual love and its inclusive orgasmic potential.

We invite contributions on any aspect of Ecosexuality including those mentioned above and many more.

We accept contributions in various forms, including academic studies, philosophical, theoretical, and critical articles, reports from the field, testimonial narratives, interviews, poems, performance pieces, artists’ pages or other visual representations, reports from events, courses, and other transformative experiences, and more.

Love is the heart of democracy, and as the 99 percent reinvents this practice as a horizontal system of participation and inclusion, we invite Gaia, the third planet, to grace us with her hospitality and sustenance. May this volume speak her voice too.

Submissions and inquiries should be sent to serena.anderlini@gmail.com and bethstephens@me.com. Proposals will be accepted by email (MS-Word or RTF). Please send inquiries by March 1st, 2012. Complete submissions will be due by May 1st, 2012. Please send a one page proposal and a bio.

the tale of Greeneyes and Penelope continues.

This time they're getting closer, traveling on the train of desire their auras are already brushing against one another from a distance. Then they connect and immediately the search for a personal space to witness their love.

Qualche messaggio sul telefonino, colorati dettagli per riconoscerci alla stazione "ho un trench nero e stivali neri...sarà divertente ed anche eccitante cercarci tra la folla" mi scrivi.
Ho una sottile euforia, un po' di incoscienza forse, ma ancora un volta sono pronta a tuffarmi ed a vivere intensamente un'esperienza nuova ed eccitante, sicuramente arricchente.
Eccomi in stazione, tutti hanno una direzione precisa, traiettorie razionali ed io invece mi muovo casualmente, con gli occhi che cercano la meta, per ora solo "trench e stivali neri".
Finalmente ci individuiamo tra la gente, un reciproco sorriso, un caldo abbraccio ed un bacio sulla bocca, lì in mezzo alla gente; due marocchini ci guardano con gli occhi spalancati, ma noi due abbiamo già incominciato a chiudere il mondo fuori, indecentemente ed allegramente.
Per prima cosa mi colpiscono i tuoi occhi, il tuo sguardo dai riflessi iridescenti e liquidi mi sovrasta leggermente e sento subito il calore del tuo corpo che mi avvolge, senza timore alcuno, e la tua testa che accenna un tenero movimento fa ondeggiare i capelli scuri ad accarezzare le spalle.
Sul taxi le nostre mani si intrecciano e ci parliamo, come se ci conoscessimo da sempre; le mie dita accarezzano il dorso della tua mano e già desidero scorrere la tua pelle ambrata ed assaporarne il gusto.

Hi lovely Earthlings!

One more poem from Alice Van Pelt. This one is a bit sad. She seems to have a hard time staying well. Her sleep, her days are a bit tormented. She holds on to her source and feels its presence at every step. When she has a "moment" free of torment, she dedicates it to that source. This reminds me of a beloved friend, Eros. I often tease him that "atheism" is just another religion as I used to do with my dad. And yet what I like about him, what makes him unique among beloveds, is the "religious" way he'll do what's on the plate, including love. Love to Eros is like a prayer. It's like a religious ritual and a trance. I am sure this mother would be in awe of that. It is a joy to be part of the narratives of the amazing human family!

Seize the Moment

I thank you Lord because you're there

Dear Earthlings,

yours truly is blessed with some tales from Italy. She wants to share them. With antiquity in the background, the legacy of initiation into the arts of loving is still present. The arts are a way to know, and the art of love is very effective. The most important thing is knowing oneself. And what's a better way to accomplish that than to love someone who is like oneself?

Ode alla fonte pura, or Ode to the Pure Source is precisely that, an ode to the source of self-knowledge. This source is met when one encounters another like onself for love. The two women in this tale choose to experience one another as lovers as they seek that deeper enounter with the self that comes from the resemblance.

Some might call this tale bisexual. That would be ok. In the wider horizon of love as the art of knowledge of the world, bisexuality is the healthiest possible sexual orientation as long as the arts of love are not revered yet. When that reverence happens, the need for bisexuality disappears, and love becomes the path to knowledge and its method.

Mi lascio cullare dal dondolio del treno, lancio avanti nel tempo i miei occhi chiusi, ad immaginare il tuo sguardo; la fantasia è libera di spaziare, ho pochi elementi di te, una piccolissima foto icona di Messenger, parole sullo schermo, tracce allusive per mille possibili esiti, unica certezza il desiderio profondo di conoscerci e di legare le nostre esistenze, anche solo per un fugace incontro.

Sono serena, un po' trepidante, è la prima volta, è la prima volta, ripeto dentro di me, che finalmente il fascino misterioso dell'essere femminile potrà svelarsi alla mia inesauribile voglia di vita e di conoscenza.
So già che ciò che desidero non è solo un corpo speculare al mio, ma è altro, è la scoperta reciproca della pelle, del respiro interiore, del movimento lento e sinuoso, dolce ed accattivante, un'altra me che parla con me.

yours truly has been interested in Amrita, the pure pleasure liquid that inundates the Earth with joy. It gushes out of the yoni and was known as the "nectar of the gods." With the divorce of the erotic and the sacred brought about by monotheists, knowledge of this liquid had been lost. There is now a movement to recuperate it. Amrita squirts out of the urethra when it becomes engorged. Every woman has the potential to activate the flow, and a few can. It is very pleasurable. Yours truly makes a pledge: When the world is as preoccupied about Amrita as it is about male ejaculate, we will have peace on Earth.

This quick tale comes from an exercise in "power words," from the course How to Write a Book in 90 Days, by Kamala Devi. The power words used are "waterfall," "explode," and "storm." Thanks Kamala!

Waterfall Explodes in a Storm

He was looking at the waterfall out of her yoni. It was copious, abundant, translucent, wet.

He felt something in the relationship was about to explode. He became afraid of it yet could not free himself of the hypnotic spell. He kept staring at the waterfall until the cascade became even more abundant and hypnotic.

There was a storm between them waiting to happen. He knew it. She knew it. They had not had an open heart conversation in months. He eluding her. She eluding him. Each in his/her own way was aware that too much was on the plate, too much had gone unsaid. The explosion was inevitable. So he put his hand under her crotch, felt the translucent liquid warm his palm in a waterfall of wetness.

He looked at her face, strove to meet her gaze, otherworldly, hypnotized by her own pleasure.

"Shall we resume our open-heart conversations?"

Hi lovely Earthlings!

This week we get into another aspect of Alice's life. She was a leader and a public speaker in educational events about the Afro American cultural heritage. Her scrapbook reports some of the talks she prepared. Here's one where an introduction is followed by poetry and music. Who should be ashamed of slavery? Alice's presentation begs the question. Again, we are present to an inclusive voice that embraces all of the Afro American heritage, that looks at history as a flow. Not a tale of winners and losers, but rather a sense of creativity, of music, dance, ritual, song, of feeling life pulsating together as we overcome odds. Perhaps this is the art of living after all.

Two voices are present: Alice and her husband Harold. He is the musician who accompanies the song. The pictures refer to the African American music scene in New Jersey in the early 20th Century of which he was part.

Exploring Our Afro American Heritage

From the mountains of West Virginia to the farmlands of Pennsylvania

From the West Coast to the East Coast

From the South to the North

They came and they kept coming

And they kept signing, playing music.

Beating the drums to freedom.

African Americans--survivors of a spiritual people--people who made it out of the trials and tribulations of Slavery.

We are here today to explore that history through music.

It is a rich heritage that will not be denied

That must be fortified, restored, built up in our young people for future generations.

Black folks have a strength that has survived racism, depression, recession, and genocide--all designed to steal, kill, and destroy them. The term of "we shall overcome" aptly describes their perseverance.

Our Program today depicts thought "music" pictures from whence we have come and will point out a direction for others to follow.

To show where we are going.

I would like to take you back to the period when slavery existed--a regression for black people--a time when the only thing that kept them going was faith in God. Music became an integral part of their day to day existence--the Negro Spirituals became a coded message used to signal that the master was coming--notify them of a meeting tonight--to "steal away"--meet secretly in old barns, people's home, anywhere they could pray and ask God to deliver them from the bondage of slavery--strong faith sustained them.

Recent study of Newark's black music scene

During the 19h Century Gospel songs were sung in the Black churches--Gospel meaning "Good News." Webster's Dictionary defines Gospel music as African American music--combining spirituals, Blues and Jazz--isn't it strange that each type of music is distinct in its own right? Spirituals are sacred songs also called jubilees, folk songs, shout songs, sorrow songs, slave songs, slave melodies. Gospel music added another facet, they became religious songs used in church to lift the spirit. Even though Blues and Jazz were performed in the clubs and honky top bars--this music also came out of the souls of black folks and contributes to the Black Heritage.

Alice: "I want to first show you a picture of role models who motivated me--my mother was the one who pointed me in the right direction--even though she died when I was nine years old. Those formative years have stayed with me throughout my life. I have always felt her presence guided me, teaching me--at the time I didn't know it but God was with me and through his guidance my mother was there--I wasn't a 'motherless child'"--play the song.

After he finishes, Alice to continue with poem "Troubled Water"--do spiritual "Wade in the Water."

Today we all face a new type of slavery, a modern type of bondage--destruction of the family--no matter what the color or race of people. Drug addiction has taken its toll. Again, we must all work together in unity to break the bonds of slavery and be free.

Dear Earthlings:

Did you notice the wisdom of these words? Yours truly remembers when she first moved to the United States. She lived with emigres in California. African Americans were definitely her first American friends. So warm, so welcoming, so magical in their ways of being together. She felt privileged to be accepted by them. Never treated like a "foreigner." What moves me in these notes is Alice's mention of her late mother, the model she offered, the spirit who lingered on to protect the little girl. And her final note: whose "family" is she talking about? Is it the normative, nuclear family, the family of all African Americans, or perhaps the human family? And drugs? What drugs is she talking about? The drugs that medicalize the lives of seniors and other people with chronic illnesses to the point of making conscious death a more sustainable choice? The drugs that infest the streets of the poor and replace the hope for an education that only money and privilege can access? The drugs that kill one's creativity rather than enhance it? When I read Alice's poems without the prejuduce against monotheism, all kinds of meanings and interpretations are open.

9 of 12 | Monday is for Religion: "Those Sizzling Seniors," by Alice E. Van Pelt

Hi lovely Earthlings!

Yours truly is back with another of Alice's poems. This time she talks about how it feels to be a "senior," to get "older." Oh well, aren't we all going to feel that way--if we're lucky enough to stick around! Yours truly is absolutely ignorant about Protestantism, especially the American denominations, and so she had to educate herself about Presbyterianism. And sure enough she found out that the Elders are respected. How nice! Being raised by a grandmother always helps a young girl respect old age. Yours truly is aware. And Alice experienced that as well. As an adult, she lived in New Jersey, where the toxic soup that produces so many of the chronic illnesses of today is particularly thick, including industrial waste, nuclear plants, soil, water, and air contamination, and much more. She suffered and died from one of them. Yet in this poem she celebrates the seniority of age. Seniors are ablaze with a special kind of energy: more subdued, more long-standing, wiser and steadier. Old age can be a fun age if one relishes one's memories. Remembering past events with joy can be just as much fun as being part of them once was. One may not attend in person, but once the memory is written in the body the dream can stay awake. And of course, more longevity, more cherished memories.

As Alice remembers:

THOSE SIZZLING SENIORS

Don't write us off yet, cause we're ready to roll

Just see what you get when you're calling us old

You forget that we have been where you're trying to go

And we have the skin from the battles to show.

Like a TIMEX watch we've been taking a licking.

But also we've found that we have kept on ticking.

We've learned to slow down to a steady pace--

Keeping ourselves still in the race.

We try to remember the things that we have done.

The trials, tribulations and the prizes we've won.

And you look around but there is no one to blame.

There is always a place that you want to be

But somehow you wonder if that's for me.

Dear Earthlings:

Did you notice the wisdom of these words? Alice wants to be seen as senior, not old. Senior, as in one worthy of respect, not "over the hill," as they say. Senior, as in one whose wisdom has accrued with experience. And isn't saving one's energies part of that wisdom as well? One can interpret this poem from the point of view of an artist of love. The wisdom Alice claims speaks of one who lived life in an artistic way. The art of living is what she calls attention to as she claims her senior place in the world. That, yours truly bets, is the message she wants all descendants to get.

Hi lovely Earthlings,

You know how prejudiced yours truly is against monogamy. "Monogamy is all about exclusion," her mind goes! So, let's exclude monogamy and we can be inclusive then. Same applies to religion, no? Monotheism is what drives the cultural wars. So, let's be pagan instead. We can include however many deities and there will be no wars! Well, when she read the poems in this series she realized the cost of this prejudice.

This series, "What Is Mono?" includes poems from unpublished collections by Alice E. Van Pelt. This woman was the mother of yours truly's beloved, a friend we'll call Eros. He is devotional, magical, and absolutely inclusive in his love. Alice was Eros's confidante and favorite parent. She left a legacy of poems and yours truly offered to take it on as form of devotion to Eros and his loss.

The Van Pelts are Presbyterians. In the North-East this denomination is not uncommon among African-Americans with deep roots in Unionist states. With its abstract, non-representational sense of the sacred, its exigent work ethic, it was probably a belief system that sustained them better in the industrialized economy of the Eastern Seaboard. Alice's poetry is very religious, and very inspiring in that way. There is a fervor, a devotion, that marks it as genuine, heartfelt. The words dance on the page and recollect themselves in a gentle prayer, as in the poem you'll find below, to Alice's two sons.

However, Alice's vision is just so far removed from that of the African American women's voices that have guided yours truly to first question the ideology behind the single white male deity Christians call "God." As in, for example, Ntozake Shange's "i found god in myself and loved her, loved her fiercely."

What was yours truly going to do with this legacy on a blog that's devoted questioning that belief system and supporting others who do so?

Sometimes the contradictions, the inner conflicts of our lovers help us untangle some of our own. Eros is of course not a monotheistic person at this point. And yet there is a correspondence between his magic as an artist of love and Alice's as a wordsmith.

Yours truly often claims that monogamy is not the opposite of polyamory but just a special case of it. The number "1" just happens to be the first in an infinite series that includes it. By the same token, monotheism is just a special case of polytheism. The infinite, not the one, is where the whole resides.

"Polytheism, polyamory, are just more inclusive, that's all," yours truly claims. But then, does that alleged inclusiveness give one the right to exclude monotheism and monogamy--to declare them obsolete, prejudiced, or wrong?

If we who believe in poly truly believe that poly is inclusive we need to practice that by including mono, no?

So that's how yours truly came to accept Alice's poems. And, guess what, once she did, the poems acquired a whole new meaning.

For example, the poem to Alice's sons below: is it only to her own two biological sons? Can it not be read as a poem to all of the "sons" Alice's poetic voice embraces? An invocation to action, to resilience, to self knowledge, to self possession, to extending the embrace well beyond the poet's family or denomination? As yours truly reads the poems again without prejudice against monotheism, their ecumenical, inclusive values become transparent. Their evangelical message is one of courage and awareness for the infinite that is the whole.

A LETTER TO MY SONS

To my sons this time I take

this wish from Mom's heart I make.

Remember how we came to be

part of the Negro's history.

Shun not the struggle, for you see

we must continue this legacy.

Be strong in all you attempt to do

for God is always watching you.

There is hope for you in prayer today.

His aid is never far away.

Call upon him whenever life grows dim

and you must never abandon him.

Our strength is in the young today

and we must guide them all the way.

Be kind and loving to your brother

for there will never be another.

Since we were brought to this place

we have become a dying race.

Our blood is running in the streets

from drugs, and guns and men in sheets.

Our children are victims of the man's oppression.

Prejudice is the oppressor's obsession

and yet we hope for a brand new day

Three generations in Alice's family

with every step along the way.

Lift your voices loud and long

remember how hard we fought, be strong.

This torch I place within your hand

carry the struggle throughout the land.

Did you notice the wisdom of these words? Alice reminds the children to stay connected and get along, to respect each other and respect themselves. She wants them to guide the young and feel connected to their legacy. History is important, and standing for justice is more important than winning. Feeling part of that force that brings hope to our worlds, that "universal energy" that the Greeks called Eros and the Christians call "God."
And since it's everywhere, then it may as well be a "one" that's form to the many.

7 of 12 | Monday is for Religion: The Art of Connecting What's Not Really Separate

Our series on religion is coming to a close. But not before we briefly look at an echo of Native American wisdom across the world. Often we think of Western culture as predatory. In reality there are many simultaneous cultural traditions in the numerous regions called West and they don't always get along. The sense of sacredness of the Earth, the notion that it belongs to itself, comes across very strong in this short poem yours truly learned from the ex-mother-in-law when she was married in Sardina. This Mediterranean island, she learned, was host to an ancient civilization whose communitarian values organized life around a main stone building the group shared, the Nuraghe.

Listen to what the poem says:

Nuraghe Prisciona, Sardinia

« Tancas serradas a muru
Fattas a s'afferra afferra
Si su chelu fit in terra
L'aiant serradu puru »

The first line refers to agricultural land that's enclosed by walls.

The second line explains that these walls were made "the grub-street way." They were built in a hurry and without consideration for the common usage that had been customary of the land, what deep ecologists call "the commons."

The third line refers to the sky or heavens, which in Italian and Sardinian are the same word: "cielo," or "chelu." It compares the Earth to the sky, which cannot be fenced. And refers to the predatory ways of those who appropriate the commons by saying that, if at all possible, they would fence out the "heavens" or sky as well.

So the poem's force comes from the way it connects the earth with sacred space: the "cielo, chelu" where people in Catholic cultures believe the sacred is located.

The affinity with Chief Seattle is that here too the Earth, the land, is sacralized again by the invective against those who keep privatizing it, appropriating it. "Should the land not deserve the same reverence the sky gets?" the poet seems to ask. "Why is it that we've come to believe we can own it?" "Does this sense of ownership not violate the Earth's sovereignty over itself?"

The Italian version echoes this wisdom:

The poem is attributed to one Melchiorre Murenu.

For those well versed in Italian or interested in another translation of Chief Seattle's Lament, here goes the Italian Lamento. It's in verse translation and yours truly brings it to you this way.

Nel 1854 il governo degli Stati Uniti offrì una grossa somma per l'acquisto del territorio di una tribù di pellirosse, che avrebbe poi dovuto sistemarsi in una riserva. Il capo della tribù replicò col documento che qui pubblichiamo. Avevo l'edizione integrale di questa splendida lettera che purtroppo è andata persa. Questa è una versione leggermente ridotta. Questo documento da un'idea della profondità e sensibilità dell'animo del popolo pellirosse, tutt'altro che selvaggio. Il sentimento di comunione con la natura ed il cosmo e la concezione immanente della loro spiritualità sono sorprendentemente affini alla concezione Zen della vita e dell'Universo. Ritrovare questo profondo sentimento di comunione con la natura è la base su cui costruire il proprio equilibrio interiore.

Questa terra è sacra

Come potete comperare o vendere il cielo,
il calore della terra?
L'idea per noi è strana.
Se non possediamo la freschezza dell'aria,
lo scintillio dell'acqua,
come possiamo comperarli?
Ogni parte di questa terra è sacra per il mio popolo.
Ogni ago di pino che brilla,ogni spiaggia sabbiosa, ogni vapore nelle scure foreste, ogni radura e ronzio d'insetto è sacro nella memoria e
nell'esperienza del mio popolo.

A queste condizioni noi considereremo la vostra offerta di comperare la nostra terra.
Se noi decidessimo di accettare, io porrei una condizione:
che l'uomo bianco deve trattare gli animali di questa terra come suoi fratelli...
Cosa è l'uomo senza gli animali?
Se tutti gli animali se ne andassero,
I'uomo morirebbe per la grande solitudine dello spirito.
Poiché qualsiasi cosa accada agli animali,
presto accade all'uomo.
Tutte le cose sono collegate.
Potreste insegnare ai vostri bambini
